Savings And Protection – As You Rebuild After A House Fire

 

There are some steps that should be taken into consideration while you prepare to rebuild your home after a house fire. These steps, if taken, could save your new home from another disastrous fire. And learn how you can save before – and after – you rebuild.

Fire extinguishers: There are different types for different fires. The kitchen, garage, and workshop should be equipped with an extinguisher rated B-C. This type is most effective on grease, oil, appliances, electrical outlets, and circuit breakers. This type is filled with powder or foam. An extinguisher rated A-B-C should be equipped in the rest of the house. This type is effective on paper, wood, cardboard, and most plastics, along with the effectiveness of the B-C type. However, an A-B-C type leaves a sticky residue that can be damaging to electrical appliances such as a computer. It is recommended that one extinguisher be on each level of flooring in a home.

Smoke detectors: A detector with an ionic sensor sets off an alarm when it sees fire. These are good at detecting small amounts of smoke that would occur with a quick flaring fire and are very cost effective. A detector that is photoelectric detect slower burning fires that produce alot of smoke. They best type to purchase would be the combination of the two. This type takes the guesswork out of which to use in each area of your home. A smoke detector should be placed on each level of the home. It is recommended that one be placed outside of the kitchen area and bathrooms with showers no more than three feet of the door and in-between each bedroom. If you sleep with your bedroom door closed, then one should be placed in your room.

Fire alarm system: With this system you have the ability to place the alarms wherever needed. It is very important if a family member is at home alone and is not capable of escaping without assistance. A fire alarm system has a central control panel where the smoke alarms and heat detectors are connected, along with bells or horns. This system operates from electricity, but, usually has a battery back-up. In addition to fire protection, this type of system is usually part of a total security system protecting you from burglaries.

Residential sprinklers: Sprinklers limit the size and impact of a fire – keeping the fire from spreading. The sprinklers act fast and work with your home’s water system. Sprinklers not only put out fires but contols them by lowering the air temperature. Only one or two sprinklers near the fire activate so there is no flooding. The fire department should be called to shut the valves off. This is so they may determine when it is safe to turn the water off.
